Joanna and her husband used to celebrate payday by treating the family to dinner out.

But when they realized dining out was becoming a luxury, they didn’t want to lose that special payday ritual that their kids looked forward to.

Instead of a pricey restaurant, this mom got creative—she bought some candles and served dinner at home by candlelight.

Her kids were totally into it!

Eating by candlelight felt just as special as a night out, and it saved Mom and Dad a lot of cash!

You can totally transform mealtime without breaking the bank. Here’s how to make every dinner hour a memorable family time:

Ditch the Screens: Turn off the TV and put away your phones.

Go Colorful and Nutritious: Serve up healthy meals that look awesome on a plate!

Share Your Day: Encourage everyone to chat about what happened that day. And remember:

Gentle Corrections: Keep discipline light—focus on guiding, not correcting too harshly.

Set Boundaries: No fighting, whining, or yelling allowed—keep the vibe positive!

No Knock Rule: No joking or sarcastic remarks that could hurt someone’s feelings.

For special occasions, make it even more festive

by serving dinner by candlelight
or consider using a unique “honor” plate just for these moments, designed to celebrate one family member.

Think birthdays, Mother’s Day, or whenever someone achieves something cool.

You can also create your own family food traditions.

Birthday cake is classic, but why not develop other special treats that feel unique to your crew?

When Joanna’s kids were little, their dad traveled a lot, so on the first night he was gone, they cheered themselves up with a fun meal called Bird’s Nests (boiled eggs nestled in cooked spinach).

Sure, Dad might not have been impressed, but the kids loved it, and it took just 15 minutes to whip up.

Another fun idea? A “My Special Dinner” project.

Monthly, let each child plan their own dinner with your help—let them pick out groceries and join in the cooking.

Keep the menu a surprise for everyone else, turning the prep time into a learning experience about nutritious cooking and presentation. And why not throw in some DIY table decorations for added flair?

For a twist, try a treasure hunt meal

Hide different meal components around the house or yard, then create a clue trail. Start with the first clue to find drinks, then onto the salad, veggies, and finish with dessert!

Feel free to get creative with the clues—use pictures for younger kids or riddles for the older ones.

This is a great way to engage everyone, but it can get a little messy, so taking it outdoors is a smart move!
