Becky Cerling Powers

Hey there! I’m Becky Powers

Becky Creates Stories & Resources for Families

For 40 years I’ve been writing, publishing, teaching & creating resources for families who want to love, thrive & survive.

I have published over 1000 story-based family features & parenting insight articles in newspapers & other publications in the U.S. and South Africa, developed curriculum for Sunday School & All-Ages Bible studies, worked as a teaching artist in public schools, and taught writing classes in the community for all ages – kindergarten to adult & special education.

Becky Powers’ Story

I’m a wife, retired journalist, homeschool mom of three, and grandma to nine incredible grandkids. I live in the diverse borderland of Texas and Mexico, with my husband, Dennis, who is a geologist.

Being married to a geologist is never dull! While there have been times when I felt like a solo parent due to Dennis’s work explorations around the globe, his work & his interests have also opened doors to stunning destinations that I probably would never have visited otherwise. Plus, I got to see it all with a guide who explained how the scenery got there. A related fun fact: each of our three kids was conceived on a different continent.

50 Years of Adventure

Dennis & I celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary as best we could during the 2020 Covid 19 Lockdown.

If I take the ancient psalmist’s wisdom that we get 70 to 80 years of life, then I’m nearly at the 80 mark. And I’m grateful for every year. My life has been full.

We started homeschooling back in 1983, right when the movement was just taking off. So, we helped fight the battle for legal recognition of homeschooling in Texas. I enjoyed helping to start the first homeschool support group in El Paso, acted as a resource for parents across the country, and occasionally advocated for homeschooling in my work as a newspaper journalist and parenting columnist.

A Grateful Survivor

My other battle in life was with cancer. I am a grateful survivor.

My battle with cancer and my years as a caregiver for aging parents deepened that perspective. Those seasons taught me how fragile life can be, but also how much strength, grace, humor, and hope can be found in ordinary daily moments. For more than 40 years, I’ve been creating stories and resources to help families love, thrive & survive through all the beautiful and difficult seasons of life.

Caregiving

On the caregiving side, Dennis and I helped his mother care for his dad during his struggle with Alzheimer’s. Then later, I became the primary caregiver for my mother-in-law until she passed away in 2012 at the impressive age of 102. (If you’re wondering, she attributed her long life to her youthful love of dancing.)

P.S. I am also the proud, delighted grandmother of Kendra Powers, teenage photographer of Bait the Toad. Kendra’s photographs show what happens when a 12-year-old artist decides to raise a pet toad, take him on walks, and sculpt hats for him.
