Insights and Reflections for Parents in February: from the Parent Powerline
Tuesday, February 1, 2022 by Becky Cerling Powers

On Sundays…the Valentine season can be an annual reminder that children flourish in the overflow of their parents’ love for each other. Nurturing your marriage relationship should be a top priority not only for this reason, but for the fact that children grow up and move on, so you need to be building your relationship for the empty nest years. When you as a couple feel secure in each other’s love, your children will feel secure, too. Unity takes two.

On Mondays… A child’s spirit withers on a diet of criticism but thrives on encouragement. So don’t wait for children to please you with major accomplishments. Notice what they do right and say something positive about it. Recognize and praise the small steps they take on the way to achievement.

On Tuesdays… Children grasp science in school best if they have lots of opportunities to experience hands-on science at home. So plant your own trees, flowers, or vegetables and get children involved in weeding and watering. Teach them to cook and work with tools. Keep magnets, magnifying glasses, electrical sets and other science materials handy for play.

On Wednesdays… You can help your children become kinder by banning movies, videos, and TV programs that base humor on insults and put downs. These kinds of situation “comedies” teach children that it’s “cool” to use humor to belittle other people. Kids need to understand that belittling people makes them avoid you, and it destroys your own ability to form trusting relationships.

On Thursdays… Everyone benefits when you make your expectations clear. Just saying “Clean this room’’ does not communicate clearly what you, as an adult, expect a clean room to look like. Chore charts can help. For example, you can post a short list for daily pickups inside each child’s closet (“Your room is picked up when…”) and a longer list for weekly clean ups  (“Your room is clean when…”)

On Fridays… Plan to make a sit-down family meal special from time to time. Serving supper by candlelight for special occasions is simple, for example, but it makes even an ordinary meal special to children.

On Saturdays… seek good spiritual counselors for yourself and your children. Sometimes ordinary believers can give you more down-to-earth help than professional clergy. The secret for figuring out who to ask spiritual questions is to look at people’s lives. The ones most likely to help you are those whose daily lives are marked by these qualities: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
